What to get and give for the holiday? Practical gifts that actually do something!

(Disclaimer: We are not getting paid to review or promote these products)

This is the second part to our HandBookLive.com Holiday Gift Guide based on the products we have selected because we find them interesting, unique or practical, and because they all have video handbooks that show what the products are, what features they have, and how to use them.

As we said before, we believe that in the near future all products will have video handbooks to help consumers not only preview the products but also provide easy visual instructions on how to use these products. I am really looking forward to that day when I no longer have to figure out how to use my cellphone by flipping through a manual.

I want to focus in this part on products that are leaning more towards practical while at the same time being interesting and unique in our opinion.

1. SpinGymŪ: Gyrotronic Exercise Device by Spin Gym
http://spingym.homestead.comSpinGym

SpinGymŪ is a really fun exercise tool and you can literally do a quick workout at your desk, carry it with you in your car, in your purse or exercise while watching tv! Remember spinning buttons on a thread when you were a kid? I loved it, and of course I forgot all about those childhood memories until I saw the SpinGym. I have to admit that just like in a training session you will see on the video, I didn’t get it to spin the first time I tried on my own. But after I watched the video and especially the part where Forbes Riley, the inventor of the SpinGym, works with a complete novice and demonstrates the common mistakes and how to avoid them – I was off and running. It worked like a charm. I actually keep it my desk drawer because a lot of times I have to wait a few minutes now and then for videos to encode for example, so I just grab the SpinGym and play around with it for a minute or two to keep me busy. Before I used to get up and grab a cup of coffee or a piece of chocolate instead… It also works as a good distraction when I am anxious about something or mentally stuck and need to switch gears.
The video handbook for the SpinGym comes with numerous exercise routines in addition to the beginning chapters that help you work on your technique as you get started. Here is a Quick Start chapter showing you the basics of spinning. I suggest you also watch the chapter called “Tips on Getting Started” – that’s the one where Forbes Riley works one on one with someone who is trying SpinGym for the first time and corrects student’s mistakes on the fly.

2. Cyber Clean Cleaning Pad by Viatek
www.viatekproducts.com CyberClean

I have to admit that I never actually bought anything that I saw on an infomercial but this product is quite tempting. Maybe someone will give it to me as a gift and I will try it one day. It really is appealing because my own keyboard looks like it was recently recovered from a dumpster and it still has cookie crumbs and coffee stains as evidence of its whereabouts. And the bright yellow gel looks like silly putty to me, so it almost makes cleaning fun. You can watch complete video for CyberClean on the HandBookLive website, and here is my favorite chapter (Quick Start):

3. Safety Tat Child ID tattoo by SafetyTat
www.safetytat.com Safety tat: complete video

When I first saw the title of this product I thought it was either a joke or a new take on face painting, but once I saw the video I got the idea. I don’t have kids, however, I did work as a figure skating coach years ago, and I can see how this little stick on tattoo can help. Skating rink during a public session, especially during holidays, can be a total nightmare: Kids are everywhere, and it is impossible to keep track of them or see who is getting off the ice and heading down to the pizza place without parents even noticing it. So I give my vote for this product as a practical gift to people who have children. Watch complete video handbook for SafetyTat, or just watch this Introduction chapter to get a better idea about it:

4. MrBeams MB371 Remote Control Spotlight by Wireless Environment.
www.mrbeams.com wireless spotlight

Now this is the most practical gift, and is probably more of a family gift – something you would get for your parents to help them be safer in their house by adding this wireless security light without the hassle of wiring anything. I love the handy remote control that comes with it to. The most you would have to do is mount it on a wall with screws, but if you are not even that handy – it comes with a stake, so you can simply put it in the ground. It comes with detailed video instructions, so you will not be left in the dark when it comes to helping you install and program it. 5. Folding picnic table by Steve Bartholomew Studio
stevebartholomewstudio.com

Winter may not be the time to think about having an outside picnic but then it all depends. Here in California we spend a lot of times outside all year round, and that’s why I put this beautiful picnic table on our “practical wish list”. It makes me think of camping, BBQ ribs, kicking off my shoes and reading a good book, listening to the birds, and enjoying an early morning when everything is fresh and crisp.

Hope we gave you some inspiration if you were stuck in your holidays gift shopping. I look forward to the third part of the HandBookLive Holiday Gift Guide: “Gifts for you and your home”.
