Celebrating Innovation in the YouTube Screening Room

Whether it's utilizing new techniques, telling a story in a novel way or focusing on a groundbreaking subject, filmmaking is a craft in which innovation takes center stage. So it's with great pleasure that we introduce a new round of films in the Screening Room, courtesy of Lexus, celebrating convention-breakers, thought-provokers and envelope-pushers.

To start, we've got four very different films. "Papiroflexia" (Spanish for "origami") is the animated tale of Fred, a chubby man with a passion for paper folding, who wants to change the world with his art. The documentary short "Kung Fu Wang" explores the life of a martial arts master whose real contribution to society is not what you think. In "Little Minx Exquisite Corpse: Cara," a less-than-glamorous actress in Los Angeles might not be exactly what producers are looking for, but why should something like that stand in the way? And in "Windowbreaker," a pair of young siblings build a home-alarm system to protect themselves against a group of neighborhood burglars.

Stay tuned because in two weeks, we'll have a new round of innovative shorts.

Nate Weinstein, Entertainment Marketing Associate, recently watched "Muni Fight."

This is really cool.  A 2009 Webby awards winner, Animoto produces TV-quality music videos using your photos and video clips in just minutes.  It sort of like muvee and the other "automated" music video editing programs but is all done online.

Once you have registered and started your account, you start by by uploading a series of videos or still images - you can also retrieve images or video from an online site. You then can pick from one of Animoto's sound tracks or you can upload your won. You can add text, turn images around or select sections for "highlighting/" For the videos, you can select a segment to use in the completed Animoto video. Once you are ready, you ht the start button and let Animoto do its thing. Animoto uses its patent-pending, Cinematic Artificial Intelligence to analyze the music and cuts together a music video to the beat of the music. Animoto also makes it easy to share the completed videos by adding them to your MySpace & Facebook profiles, on your blog, e-mail them to friends, put them up on YouTube or download them onto your computer. You can create a short 30 second movie for free or pay three bucks to create longer music videos.

This is an interesting concept - Superl8tive allows its users to create and share lists of their favorite viral videos. When other users vote on the videos within a list, Superl8tive changes the standings to reflect the opinion of its populous. People love making lists, love being judgmental and love watching videos; Superl8tive smashes the three together to create the hottest video viewing experience on the internet. Plus, smart people like to use words like superlative, so it's also just cool to say.

CommonCraft is a cool little company that makes educational videos for educators and business.  videos line community consulting company. Since 2007, they have created over 30 videos that have been viewed over 10 million times online.  "Our videos may surprise you. They're short and simple. They use paper cut-outs. They cover subjects "in Plain English." But lurking under the simple surface are lessons that have been crafted with great care. Despite our fun and lighthearted style, we take explanation seriously."

KarmaTube - the world is full of wonderful and inspiring stories, some unfolding in distant places and others right next door. KarmaTube is dedicated to bringing more of these stories to light, using the power of video and the internet to demonstrate and multiply acts of compassion, generosity and selflessness.

Our vision is to create and connect a global network of volunteers awake to capturing these stories, using simple digital video cameras. While the stories produced may be polished and professional or diamonds-in-the-rough, the crucial through-line is this: they celebrate the work of local change agents, demonstrating the ways "do something" moments can be "tipping point" experiences for individuals and communities. To complete the circle, KarmaTube offers three simple suggestions for ways to support the action and spirit shown in each video.

KarmaTube is an evolving project of CharityFocus (and like CharityFocus, is all-volunteer run). We hope something here moves you to, as Gandhi advised, "be the change you wish to see in the world."

"We only feature chefs (nothing against home cooks filming in their kitchens), but our philosophy is that it’s best to learn from culinary school graduates and restaurant professionals.   Our thoughts are that it’s best to not reinvent the wheel and form bad habits, when you may already be slightly frustrated in the kitchen."

15 Seconds of Fame

THIS IS A GREAT CONCEPT TO GET EYEBALLS -

Not good enough to be on American Idol?  Too much respect to go on The Jerry Spring Show?

For a buck, you can show off your 15 seconds of excellence.

15 Seconds of Fame gives everyone a chance at their moment in the sun. According to the site's creators, "There's no more long audition lines, smirky judges or silly hoops to jump through (unless jumping through silly hoops is your talent). We believe anyone can be a star, be an idol and become internet famous. And we believe it's time to get paid! Best of all, we've compressed a whole season of a reality TV talent competitions down to just 3 short days."

The concept is simple: record a 15 second video of your talent, upload and submit it to one of numerous contests, then wait and see if America loves you. Anyone can vote, and anyone (regardless if you've submitted to a contest or not) can make a profile.

15SOF provides an active, social, stimulating place to discover awesome talent and pitifully amusing lack of talent. Contests are designed to be fair, fun, interactive and lucrative for contestants. Your brother can submit a video of his worst wipeout, and that barbershop guy can show Adam Lambert what real vocal talent is. We make it easy for everyone and anyone to submit, view, vote and comment. All winners are determined solely by vote, meaning they're genuinely and honestly the most talented and entertaining people as chosen by America.

There is an $1.00 upload fee for each audition you submit. However, you can submit up to 3 video auditions and 3 image auditions into any contests at once. Watching and voting is FREE

Break A Leg - the online sitcom -

www.breakaleg.tv - DAVID PENN just got his first sitcom, Groommates, picked up -- the problem is, he may not live long enough to see it succeed. That's right, aside from the regular trials and tribulations that come with shooting a sitcom, David has one other problem -- he's going to die at the end of the season. How? That remains to be seen. Why? That's another important piece of information that David has yet to figure out. But as he narrates his story from beginning to end, one fact remains -- he will die, in the storage room, with a gun to his head and the sounds of a fake laugh track in his ears.

A show not only about show business, but relationships, fame, entertainment, and death -- BREAK A LEG is a mix of The Office and Arrested Development with a bit of murder thrown in, just for good measure.

Videos: Gymnastic Robot Built with LEGO Mindstorm's NXT. Ok, so we've learned robots can smash through windows and do recon and sumo wrestle as well. But what about gymnastics? Sure there aren't any "floor exercises" with music, but this is almost as good!

Videos: Rugged and Portable Reconnaissance Robot. How many times have you thought of building a reconnaissance robot, then stopped to ask yourself "But can it be thrown through a glass window and still work fine?" Well, this video from the National Robotics Engineering Center answers that question.

Revision3 - Unlike aggregators, mash-ups, and user-generated video sites, Revision3 is an actual TV network for the web, creating and producing its own original, broadcast quality shows.

They definitely have some cool content - we really like WebDrifter which visits in real time and in the real world, some of the oddest, strangest and most bizarre web sites and the people and organizations behind them. Great concept.

The Revision 3 content is designed for a new audience: passionate committed fans who want to watch shows that entertain, educate and help expand their life experiences. The audience expects professionally produced programming but wants it to be unexpected, edgy, smart and real. They also want to watch shows whenever they want, wherever they are, and on whatever device they choose, including everything from a 70" HDTV to an iPod or Cell phone. Revision3 covers technology, comedy, modern culture, music and more. Our hosts don't come from Hollywood. Instead, they come from the same passionate fan base as our audience. They are engaging, personal, smart and connected - experts with the insight and acceptance that naturally puts them at the center of the community.
