Origami Optics
Most camera lenses refract light, leading to the familiar cylindrical tube geometry. In some cases, where extended focal length or reduced track length are required, concentric mirrors can be used to effectively reduce barrel length. Recent advances in diamond machining and image processing make it possible to take this approach to a new extreme. With up to 8 reflections, large ray angles, and a lens shaped more like a lens cap than a tube, so-called Origami Optics allowed researchers at the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering to squeeze long focal lengths into a thin package and still collect enough light for fast, sharp exposures. Applications may range from compact imagers for micro-UAV surveillance craft to a miniature telephoto lens for future cell phones. "Our imager is about seven times more powerful than a conventional lens of the same depth," says Eric Tremblay, a UCSD electrical and computer engineering graduate student and the first author of a recent Applied Optics paper describing the new technology. Tremblay works with professor Joseph Ford in the Photonic Systems Integration Lab at the Jacobs School. The research is funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as part of the "MONTAGE" imager program.
Ultra-Thin ImagersIn Part 2 of Engineering TV's interview with Eric Tremblay, researcher at the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering, Eric discusses the Montage, a new camera design derived from a "slice" of the original full aperture symmetric lens, which features a much greater depth of field and a USB interface, all in a package about the size of a domino. "This type of miniature camera is very promising for applications where you want high resolution images and a short exposure time. This describes what cell phone cameras want to be when they grow up," says professor Joseph Ford in the Photonic Systems Integration Lab at the Jacobs School. "Today's cell phone cameras are pretty good for wide angle shots, but because space constraints require short focal length lenses, when you zoom them in, they're terrible. They're blurry, dark, and low contrast."
University of Texas Solar Vehicle Team The University of Texas Solar Vehicles Team is a student
organization sponsored by the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Under the guidance of Professor Gary Hallock, students raise funds, design, build, test, and race vehicles powered only by the sun. At over 50 members strong, the team is currently hard at work building its new car for the North American Solar Challenge 2008, the Samsung Solorean.

Samsung Solorean Solar Car
In Part 2 of an interview with Chak Man Yeung from NI Week, "Sunny" digs deeper into the University of Texas' solar "raycer". Featuring the National Instruments CompactRIO real-time programmable automation controller, the Samsung Solorean features one of the most sophisticated electrical systems in solar car "raycing". While the CompactRIO is primarily for battery protection, it also does state of charge calculations, cell balancing, array control, cruise control, HMI (via a touch screen), and telemetry. Solar car "rayces" are nationally organized events, with competition among dozens of colleges and universities. The challenge is to design, build, and race the best solar-powered vehicle. The mission is to promote educational excellence and team work among all competitors. To accomplish this goal, teams must integrate technical and business expertise across a range of disciplines.
Cornell's Automotive X-Prize Team The Automotive X-Prize (AXP) will be awarded to the team that produces a 100 mile-per-gallon (equivalent) vehicle, develops a feasible business plan to produce 10,000 units, and wins a series of stage races against similar vehicles. The Cornell Automotive X-Prize (AXP) Team is the first officially registered university team competing in the Automotive X Prize Competition. The group is made up of over 70 undergraduate and graduate students from six of Cornell University's seven colleges including engineering, architecture, design and environmental analysis, and business. The multi-disciplinary group is organized into several teams, including Chassis, Electrical Components, Mechanical Components, Design, Information Management, Business Administration, and Business Plan. These groups are currently using a systems engineering approach to design an automobile that will push the limits of efficiency, feature a distinctive and unique aesthetic, and be commercially viable in the market.

Digital laser imaging technology is not only very cool, but it is also much faster and more accurate than hand drawing for architectural features found at archaeological sites. This fact is made obvious in Mesa Verde: A CyArk Case Study, the latest video feature at The Archaeology Channel (http://www.archaeologychannel.org/).
The complex World Heritage site of Mesa Verde is a good challenge for CyArk, a Kacyra Family Foundation project that is preserving the world's most valued cultural heritage sites in three-dimensional digital form. Ancestral Puebloans at Mesa Verde built cliff dwellings in AD 1200-1300. A field team in 2005 visited one site there, Spruce Tree House, to test CyArk's advanced documentation techniques. This video shows how CyArk is preserving the site in digital imagery through laser scanning and the most accurate 3D models possible today.
