This is brilliant. You got to check out this animated video by Geoffroy Barbet Massin. Merveilleusement Gris (5:45) is the story of a talking dog, a talking sheep and their French owner. It is extremely well made and very funny. Yes, it is in French but there are English subtitles.

These two films are quite interesting - Top Hat and The Jacket - by Dorothy Schafer, Rachel Tucker and Lawrence Furman. Great acting, good writing and direction. This is another very interesting use of the web to promote acting and production skills.

There's nothing like a funny romantic short to make your day perfect. Check out Brief Encounter - hosted at AtomFilms. Set in a Laundromat, this is the story of a budding romance between an uninhibited woman and a timid man. A mix-up with unmentionables spurs a love connection.
Speaking of romance, have you ever had a girlfriend or a boyfriend that really irritated you - really bugged you to no end - so much that you wanted to kill them? Check out this dark tale "Near Day II" hosted at Head on a Plate Pictures. This is evil, slightly sick but very well done.
What do you do with your old electronic gear and video games? Pile it in an old closet or hide it in the garage? Check out this video and see how Scott Snyder used an old Playstation to generate a waveform using audio. To create the effect, several different compositing modes were used to show different effects. Then using Final Cut Pro 4, video as added as a background layer. This project is an excellent demonstration of how you have hunks of old equipment and gear lying around your house or office that can used to create innovative content and effects.
"Virus" by Simon Hynd is really scary and spooky - especially if you are into computers, Internet videos and murder. Great concept - wonderful production - this is the kind of virus even Norton and McAfee can't deal with.
Talk about scary...Let's Get Medical is an extremely weird and moody short 3 minute film by Jon Tojek. Shot on 35 film, it is hosted on one of our favorite sites, UndergroundFilm.com. This film is extremely dreamy, strange and odd. We can't figure it out but it sure made our day. Let's go do some surgery.
You want to be weirded out? Cat With Hands, hosted at the Bokser Films site, is extremely well made and .... how to describe it .. very unnerving. Spooky and unforgettable. Simple in concept, it combines great cinematography with an excellent story and acting. Also, if you are a filmmaker, you got to check out PA: The Walkie Nazi Story" A satirical documentary, "PA", is a look into the life of a PA (Production Assistant), whose main role on the set is to be responsible for all the walkie talkies.
Spooky music, mysterious camera moves and out of focus shots - all together they spell terror. It's the latest in Quito Washington's "Suffer Kate" series. In this one Kate gets an eerie phone call. Short and weird. The Phone Call is hosted at Wes Craven's site for horror and scary short films, Urban Chillers. You may never want to answer the phone again...
Giving directions is not as easy as it may appear to be.. sometimes egos, prior engagements, and relationships all get in the way. Check out the ongoing saga of Going Corporate. This 7M Pictures film about corporate politics and takeovers is a soap opera based in the telecom Internet bubble industry. Sort of like a video Dilbert with sex and conflict.

Every once in a while, a truly exceptional short film gets submitted to our staff. "It's OK To Drink Whiskey" is a wonderful 10 minute film about life, death and the afterlife. Produced by Piers Fawkes, written and directed by Paul Williams and shot by Ben Moulden, the film features exceptional acting, cinematography and writing. A definite award winner. Watch the entire film - the end makes it all real. Warning - this film has a few intense situations and scenes of graphic violence.
This week IVM and 4Video is putting the spotlight on Slumber Directed by Christoffer P. Dumlao a young aspiring film maker. Most impressive is this was created on a film budget of $0, using only a Sony VX2000 cam and an iMac. Watching the credits and out takes, it is obvious these young people had fun making this short horror movie. Above all else film making should be fun. This little flick stands out because of it's exceptional soundtrack that does an effective job of building suspense. Using a knife blade as a mirror was a very clever shot, as was the special effect "in the mirror" near the end. Also playing at the iMovie Theater is Good Morning Baltimore from the Broadway hit HAIRSPRAY! This exceptionally well made clip was directed by Leo Daignault. If you can't afford actors - here is an idea. Use a puppet.
Check out Billy Bob and Them - its sort of like the female version of "Adaptation". A screenwriter consults her inner self as well as her philosphical guru, Billy Bob Thornton, to make sense of her life. Warning - contains mature language and violence.
Its your lucky day - two new films from Quito Washington. Greetings Scorpio is about a young man looking for love and being guided by his daily horoscope...This short film is directed by Kerry Lush and demonstrates the advantages of a good idea, straight-forward directing and clean writing. Caught is about a woman on the run, a man out of luck, and the consequences of not being honest... Also directed by Kerry Lush. Both of these films were shot with a Canon XM2 digital camcorder and edited with Adobe Photoshop and Premiere.
It's all about the script and the words and the idea. Sometimes you don't need fancy editing and professional cinematography to make a great short movie. Check out "Conflicted" from 2A2N Films. This is a sweet little film about self awareness and self-affirmation. You'll need the DivX player to watch it. (Free download)
Listen to this plot line - "A payphone rings on a busy New York street. Jamie picks it up and is told that if he puts the phone down he will be shot by a sniper." Sound familiar? End of the Line is a short 15 minute film by Paul Hough that served as the inspiration for the feature film "Phone Booth" starring Colin Farrell.
Here are a couple very interesting new films from BritShor ts.com. "AutoCue" is a cute and funny short film about the help all of could use once in a while when we are trying to make connection with someone of the opposite sex. "Good Luck, Mr. Grosky" is a very well produced and well shot short film about the true meaning of space flight and what it meant to some average citizens on the American mid-west. Excellent.
I just wandered into Living Room Theatre Productions and was quite impressed. This site features the work of two brothers - Jason and Shane Morris who work together to write, produce, direct and edit a series of short films. One of our favorites is the The Cleaning Lady - a light hearted look at love and relationships in our busy high tech times. Check it out.
Here are three very interesting short films and videos from ZeroOne Films. Check them out - the most impressive is is ZentholLand, the story of a manic-depressive painter lives his life a spectator. His only lifeline is a prescribed pill called ZENTHOL, created for insomniacs; it stimulates the mind during sleep. Directed by Scott Heckman, it was shot on DV. On the humorous side, check out the AntiCold, a short parody of TV drug commercials and Racy Traci's Big Bee Sting - sort of free-wheeling video travelogue - follow along as Racy Traci is stung by a bee, chased by a chicken hunter, cartwheels towards Olympic gold, and might be a trailer trash chicken!
The US version of the recently released music video clip for t.A.T.u's "Everything She Said" reminds us of a bad .25 cent porn arcade movie. Set in presumably a school yard with curious onlookers in a rainy atmosphere to make the video "wet". with an over used flash effect. Some fast paced clips are blurred with a cool effect, but much of the editing is choppy. Though there are subtle hints of symbolism in the video - it seems to lack any definite story line. Relying instead on steamy scenes of the girls in their little school girl outfits kissing each other. While the music is deserving of praise -the music video is a cheap slap-shot. Or maybe that is all part of the marketing. If for no other reason than it’s boldness, this clip earns a IVM Internet Video of the week nomination.
Its that time of the year again - the best of the Sundance Film Festival - these are the online winners.
