Why the time is right for Mobile Multimedia

In the past century, a number of major technology innovations have impacted the film and broadcast industries and created important and exciting changes in the way people produce and view different media. These developments include the addition of sound to previously silent films, the introduction of color film and broadcast technology, wide-screen cinema capabilities, and more recently digital and high-definition techniques.

Today, we are at the brink of yet another technology milestone, brought about by the evolution of computer and imaging technology, and the development of a whole new generation of wireless communications and entertainment devices. Suddenly, each person has the capability to capture and view multimedia images and sounds on an emerging class of cell phones that rely on high-speed wireless networks and small and colorful displays to present these small productions anyplace and anytime. In fact, these devices and an emerging class of applications and wireless-enabled content are giving a whole new meaning to the term ‘personal entertainment’.

Buoyed by an enthusiasm for compelling content and slick new wireless devices, mobile phone sales worldwide are climbing at a steady rate. Sales increased by about 7.8 percent during the third quarter this year (2002), reaching a total of more than 104 million units, as compared with the same period last year, according to market researcher the Gartner Group. Strong are expected to continue throughout the fourth quarter and into the first quarter of 2003, as handset makers in the U.S. unveil an exciting new generation of multimedia and Web-enabled devices featuring improved color screens and a built-in ability to handle high-level graphics.

The wireless carriers and service providers have sensed the strong kinetic energy building in this industry, and are presently working with a variety of content developers to create new and compelling content for viewing on these devices. Leaders in the film and entertainment industries are also working to develop programming for this new and cutting edge format of mobile multi-sensory entertainment and education.

The First Annual BigDigit ‘World’s Smallest Film Festival’ promises to be one of the key events at CTIA WIRELESS 2003, and another important milestone that will raise the curtain on the emerging world of mobile entertainment and visual nomadic creativity.
