The (FTTH) Fiber-to-the-home Council's Conference was recently held in New Orleans and provided some answers. The US FFC Commissioner started off the show. He intends to create a National Broadband Policy and advocates open access fiber lines to encourage competition and economic development.
At the show, my favorite presentation was "International FTTH Deployments; Lessons Learned Around The Globe". These are some items of interest they discussed: 1. There is a strong correlation between Internet usage and age (no kidding :-) 2. National broadband policies are required to make Fiber deployment happen 3. Peer to peer communication will continue to expand. A snapshot of E-Donkey showed over 4 million people online at one time sharing files with more movies being shared than songs. 4. PC penetration in the EU is half of the U.S.A. Italy has only 2% broadband. 5. In Japan they have gone from 15,000 installs per month now to 90,000 - 24% of the worlds fiber is being consumed in a country the size of California. 6. Leading the way in fiber deployment is first Korea, then Japan, China, Belgium, Canada and then the US. 7. China is a huge potential market. With a high concentration of people they have 100 million subscribers only in the wealthy areas compared to the US where there is more penetration of all society but only 110 million households in the country. 8. Canada already invested in getting fiber to all schools and with a better-educated population now that is demanding fiber they will continue to deploy. 9. Romania is now using the internet to reduce corruption in government. All government agencies now have to purchase online all goods and services and provide information over the internet so it can be tracked. 10. 32% of all fiber deployments are being done by municipalities for economic development.
Besides presentations and seminars at the (FTTH) Fiber-to-the-home Council's Conference, there were numerous exhibit booths to visit. If you look closely at this one you'll see two men racing each other on a video car race game on two big screen monitors provided by one of the Exhibitors. Proves we're all just kids at heart!
The last day pf the show, I was in the audience listening to a speaker who is making fiber deployment a part of developing new communities of homes and businesses. An audience member asked the question…."But now that xxx and xxx have gone out of business, where do we get the content?" BINGO…
Fiber-to-the-home connected to fiber backbone connected to regional servers are all needed to make this delivery of content easy enough for the consumer to download fast and use the internet as their main mode of access.
However, content is key and that is where WSN TV and Internet Video Magazine are leading the way. Internet Video Magazine aims to be the TV Guide of Internet Video and WSN TV is an online incubation center and marketing delivery company. Both companies are working to teach individuals and businesses how to take advantage of this opportunity.
