Looking for a new keyboard?

Review by Mark Shapiro

Aren’t all keyboards the same? Well not really.

I recently tried out and used the new MX Board Silent keyboard from Cherry and am quite impressed.

Let us discuss the primary attraction of this keyboard - the Silent part. IMHO - This keyboard is not silent – but it is quieter than many other keyboards.

According to the company, the new MX Silent-switches used in this keyboard “have a uniquely shaped rubber pad compared to conventional switches. The integrated 2-component stem reduces audible clicks at the bottom-out and top-out to a minimum. Instead of relying on third-party products, CHERRY relies on a self-developed, innovative solution that preserves the special properties of each individual switch. As with every other MX switch, these features include a sturdy housing made of plastic polymer, a precise spiral spring, and the unique Gold Crosspoint contact technology. This exclusive production process guarantees a precise release and a service life of over 50 million keystrokes.”

There are two versions – a red version and a black version. The black version requires a slightly higher pressure on the keys and is only available in the international EU layout with 104 keys.  It provides a full QUERTY key lout in a full-size 18.5 inch form factor.

Personally, I like this new Cherry keyboard because it is large and durable. Rated at 50 million actuations.  I appreciated the keyboard’s accuracy – each keystroke seemed to be accurate and clean, without any sloppiness and accidental keystrokes. My big fingers really liked it!

Well built and sturdy, it seems like this keyboard will last for years. Even though it is not truly “silent” I quite enjoyed its tactile feedback and ease of use.

More information about this keyboard can be found at  http://cherryamericas.com/product/g80-3000-mx-silent-keyboard/. The list price for these keyboards are $149 but can be found for less at various websites.
