Toshiba has started selling two players in the USA, a $500 model, plus the $800 HD-XA1 unit I've been testing. It's an impressive piece of work. Still, I'd wait to sort things out before rushing to buy. Rival Blu-ray players are expected by summer.
In addition to using DVD discs to play and share your videos, you can also use them as your video archives -- you can extract clips from your DVDs to re-use in new presentations. New DVD software applications allow you to directly combine portions of several discs into a new DVD, or extract segments as video files to edit into new productions. Are you a film maker? Do you yet have a web site that features your films and short videos? Why not? You don't even need to host your videos anymore. Just create a cool little site with descriptions of your videos and include links to where the videos are hosted on other sites like YouTube. For a great example, check out the Barats and Bereta web site. Not very complex or fancy, it just works and features their work. You can do this!
