Sirens – on Netflix – is a darkly comic tide of beauty, betrayal, and female rage.
By Mark Shapiro, editor – Internet Video magazine
Sirens is a short but stunning series, wrapping up its story in just five tightly woven episodes. Set against a backdrop of breathtaking coastal landscapes, the show’s beautiful location provides a sharp contrast to the darkly comic tone of its narrative. There’s something almost magical about watching these characters unravel amid the waves and cliffs, with nature itself as a silent witness to their chaos.
Devon (played by Meghann Fahy) thinks her sister Simone (Milly Alcock) has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention. But she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. Told over the course of one explosive weekend at The Kells’ lavish beach estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.
Watch it on Netflix.
Great music – Featuring “Anxiety” by Doechii including samples of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” & Luiz Bonfá’s “Seville”.
The acting is exceptional, with each member of the cast delivering nuanced performances that bring depth to the complex characters. The writing leans into dark comedy with sharp, witty dialogue that balances humor and tension. What sets Sirens apart is its focus on female emotions—raw, messy, and deeply human. The show explores themes of friendship, jealousy, desire, and loss, with its female characters at the center of the storm. They are never reduced to stereotypes; instead, they are flawed, vibrant, and utterly compelling.
There are a few cult in-jokes to appreciate. Catch them if you can.
With only five episodes, Sirens is a perfectly bingeable gem, offering a satisfying arc that’s both emotionally rich and beautifully shot. It’s a darkly funny, beautifully acted, and visually stunning exploration of female complexity set in an unforgettable location.
